10 Convicts – 20 Years

This year marks a significant milestone for an event I’ve been involved with in various capacities for a decade—its 20th anniversary! It’s a source of pride and a race that many cyclists proudly claim to have participated in.

The Convict100 is an annual migration of cyclists, each with their own motivations. Some race for victory, others simply to finish, and many just to enjoy a fantastic day on the bike.

MaxAdventure, the company organizing this event, has been a close client since I started photographing for them in 2013. My first participation was back in 2010, sparked by a conversation with colleagues at the bike shop where I worked. The idea intrigued me.

With a historic pub as the event center, imposing climbs, fast descents, creek crossings, and a man-made kayak bridge, I was captivated. So, with camera in hand, I went. I spent most of the day at the kayak bridge, half shooting photos, half grinning—what a spectacle!

A few years later, I was photographing most of MaxAdventure’s events, and for many years now, I cover all but the Queensland ones.

I’ve played many roles at this event. From photographing cyclists to capturing editorial shots along the 68 km route, and even producing video content for marketing and social media. It’s been a pleasure witnessing this event from so many perspectives and creative angles.

2026: The 20-Year Milestone

As the longest-running MTB marathon event, nothing has changed. As always, I sought new locations to photograph with the OuterImage Collective team, my event photography company founded in 2016. You can view all the cyclist photos at outerimage.com.au.

The course and the photographs have evolved over the years. I’m always looking for fresh ideas and spots. I’ve compiled a gallery of my favorites, not just for their technical quality, but for the moments and experiences they capture: friends, the MaxAdv team, and the event’s stunning setting.

I considered participating in 2026, but my primary passion is photography, and cycling has often takes a backseat to my work.  However… 2027 might be my year. It’s time to ride the convict and tackle the 100km.  Either way, I’ll see everyone on event day, whether shooting photos in the dust or kicking up my own on the bike.
