CaseStudy- MaxAdventure Race

ClientBrief

MaxAdventure have been operating events in Australia for a long time now.  Their MaxAdventure race takes place each year over four different locations.  Each year changes to the course challenge teams to paddle, kayak, mtb and orienteer their way around a course. It’s a fund day out and teams can take the challenge as serious as they like or as easy and fun as they like.

The challenge for owners Mark and Ellen is to attract new teams every year and keep the attendance up making it a successful event.

My brief was to not only capture the event but also some interviews with a few select “regular” teams and a few “new” teams to get some feedback and tips for future teams to watch.  The hope was that people who have not tried this style of race would see the videos and be inspired to come to try out and dispel any doubts they may have about being able to be apart of such an event.

Shooting the event had a few challenges from what I normally do for MaxAdventure.

  1. Getting enough content of each team while out on the course.
  2. Interviewing each team either before or after the race and getting their feedback.
  3. Creating content that was engaging but also explanatory.  This doesn’t always bind together easily.
  4.  Normally I would shoot a single main video for an event, this required 4x so there were alot more moving parts to organize.  Having prepared ideas for subjects, makeing some notes on potential questions and then interviewing teams was different from just shooting the action as it unfolded.  Preparation and understanding the event and the videos goals needed to be clear.
  5. Lastly.  Did I mention it was one a very wet day and far from ideal conditions.  Preparation having appropriate gear on hand is always a must should it be needed.
